A first year White-crowned sparrow, affectionately nicknamed "Brown-crowned" as it has not yet molted into adult plumage.
A cute little Junco in the snow.
This Junco was posing - how could I not photograph it?
One of the birds we were hoping to see, along with the Harris's sparrow. Not rare, but an uncommon bird which we see only in fall and winter here.
This is a rare bird, although in the last few years it seems that one usually turns up somewhere in the county during winter. They are such pretty birds.
Here it is doing the "sparrow hop."
For comparison, we have the Harris's sparrow, White-throated sparrow and a White-crowned sparrow in the same frame. The White-crowned is in the lower right (a little out of focus).

Yes, they are common, but aren't they striking looking birds?
Another of my favorite winter visitors - common, but cool. If you ever hear one sing, it is wonderful. They have the most beautiful song.
Harris's sparrow with Junco - a three part series
As I was going through photos, I noticed these two seemed to be moving in unison. Their posture, tail position and the direction they were looking match from frame to frame.
I love Song sparrows. A very common bird, beautiful in shades of brown and gray, and great singers.
No collection of local winter sparrow photos would be complete without a Golden-crowned sparrow.
